    there was not theleast difference between this morning and thosethe bright springs, sixeight year and sandy gold fowls still scratched round the gate, littering the earth and the field with feathers and scratchehe two thick holly bushesthe wood hedge was the hidden gap, whose fence one climbedget into the wood; the bars were scored just the samethe keeper’ was backin the eternal.

    syson was extraordinariluneasy spirithad returnedthe countryhis past, andfoundwaiting for him,  hazel still spread glad little hands downwards, the bluebells here were still wan and few, among the lush grass andshadethe bushes.

    the path through thewood,the very browa slope, ran winding easily for  around were twiggy oaks, just issuing their gold, and floor spaces diapered with woodruff, with patchesdog mercury and tuftallen trees still lay acrossjolted dowteep, rough slope, and came again upon the open land, this time looking norththrougreat windowth stayedgaze over the level fieldsthe hill top,the village which strewed the bare uplandifhad tumbled off the passing waggonsindustry, and bee watiff, modern, grey little church, and blocks and rowsred dwellings lyingrandom;the back, the twinkling headstocksthe pit, and the loomingwas naked and outdoors, noree!it was quite unaltered.

    syson turned, satisfied,follow the path that sheered downhill intowas curiously elated, feeling himself backan endurin  keeper was standinew yardsfront, barring the way.

    “where might yougoing this road, sir?” askedtonehis question hahallengin lookedthe fellow withimpersonal, observan waoung manfourfive and twenty, ruddy and wel dark blue eyes now stared aggressivelyth black moustache, very thick, was cropped short ovemall, rather sof every other respect the fellow was manly and goo stood just above middle height; the strong forward thrusthis chest, and the perfect easehis erect, self sufficient body, gave ohe feeling thatwas taut with animal life, like the thick jeta fountain balancetood with the butthis gunthe ground, looking uncertainly and questioninglark, restless eyesthe trespasser, examining the man and perating into him without heeding his office, troubled the keeper and made him flush.

    “wherenaylor?have you got his job?” syson asked.

    “you’re not from the house, are you?” inquiredcould not be, since everyone was away.

    “no, i’m not from the house,” the othe seemedamuse him.

    “then mighsk where you were making for?” said the keeper, tled.

    “where imaking for?” syson repeated.“igoingto willey–water farm.”

    “this isn’t the road.”

    “i think so.down this path, past the well, and outthe white gate.”

    “but that’s not the public road.”

    “i supposeoften,naylor’s time, iis he,the way?”

    “crippled with rheumatism,” the keeper answered reluctantly.

    “is he?”syson exclaimedpain.

    “and who might you be?” asked the keeper, witew intonation.

    “john adderley syson; i usedlivecordy lane.”

    “usedcourt hilda millership?”

    syson’s eyes opened witaine  wasan awkward silence.

    “and you who are you?” asked syson.

    “arthur pilbeam naylor’suncle,” said the other.

    “you live herenuttall?”

    “i’m lodgin’my uncle’snaylor’s.”

    “i see!”

    “did you say you was goin’ downwilley water?” asked the keeper.

    “yes.”

    there waausesome moments, before the keeper blurted:“i’m courtin’ hilda millership.”

    the young fellow lookedthe intruder wittubborn defiance, almos opened new eyes.

    “are you?”he said,  keeperflushed dark.

    “she andare keeping pany,”said.

    “i didn’t know!” sai other manwaited unfortably.

    “what,the thing settled?” asked the intruder.

    “how, settled?” retorted the other sulkily.

    “are you goingget married soon, and all that?”

    the keeper staredsilence for some moments, impotent.

    “i suppose so,”said, fullresentment.

    “ah!” syson watched closely.

    “i’m married myself,”added, afteime.

    “you are?” said the other incredulously.

    syson laughedhis brilliant, unhappy way.

    “this last fifteen months,”said.

    the keeper gazedhim with wide, wondering eyes, apparently thinking back, and tryingmake things out.

    “why, didn’t you know?” asked syson.

    “no, i didn’t,” said the other sulkily.

    there was silence fooment.

    “ah well!” said syson, supposay.”the keeper stoodsilen two men hesitatedthe open, grassy space, set around with small sheavessturdy bluebells; a little open platformthe browth tooew indecisive steps forward, then stopped.

    “i say, how beautiful!”cried.

    he had efull viewth wide path ran from his feet likiver, andwas fullbluebells, save foreen winding thread down the centre, where the keeptream the path opened into azure shallowsthe levels, and there were poolsbluebells, with still the green thread winding through, likhin currentice water through blu from under the twig purplethe bushes swam the shadowed blue,if the flowers layflood water over the woodland.

    “ah, isn’t itlovely!”syson exclaimed; this was his past, the countryhad abandoned, andhurt himsees cooed overhead, and the air was fullthe brightnessbirds singing.

    “if you’re married, whatyou keep writingher for, and sending her poetry books and things?” askedstaredhim, taken abackhe beganto smile.

    “well,”said,did not know about you...”

    again the keeper flushed darkly.

    “butyou are married ”charged.

    “i am,” answered the other cynically.

    then, looking down the blue, beautiful path, syson felt his own humiliation.“what right have ito hangto her?”thought, bitterly self contemptuous.

    “she knows i’m married and all that,”said.

    “but you keep sending her books,” challenged the keeper.

    syson, silenced, lookedthe other man quizzically, halturned.

    “good day,”said, and wa, everything irritated him: the two sallows, one all gold and perfume and murmur, one silver green and bristly, reminded him, that herehad taught her abooolwas!what god forsaken follyall was!

    “ah well,”saidhimself; “the poor devil seemshavrudge against me.i’llmy best for him.”he grinnedhimself,a very bad temper.
